Why this ingredient is used

White rice is the go-to starch for premium and veterinary pet food because it has three properties no other cereal matches. It is gluten-free, so safe for dogs with wheat or barley intolerance. It is highly digestible - around 95 percent of its calories are absorbed, compared to 80 percent for corn. And it is bland, which makes it the default recommendation for dogs recovering from digestive upset (the classic chicken-and-rice recovery diet prescribed by vets worldwide). Brown rice retains more fibre and B vitamins but is harder to digest and rarely used in commercial kibble.

Controversies and what to watch for

Rice is not controversial the way corn or wheat is, but there are two legitimate concerns. First, high glycemic index - white rice has a GI of around 73 (compared to 55 for brown rice), which means it raises blood sugar sharply and contributes to insulin resistance in cats (obligate carnivores) fed long-term rice-based diets. Second, heavy metal contamination: rice crops accumulate arsenic from soil at rates 10 to 20 times higher than other cereals, and several 2012-2020 studies found detectable inorganic arsenic in rice-based pet foods. The levels are below veterinary safety thresholds but add cumulative exposure over a 15-year pet lifespan.
