How we compare brands

Each /vs/ page picks one representative product per brand (the canonical SKU most owners encounter — usually the adult kibble or the flagship wet recipe) and grades both on the same 100-point scale. We then surface the deltas: how much more protein, how much more transparent the label, how many extra controversial additives, and how the daily ration cost compares at typical retail prices. The brand with the higher composite score is flagged as the winner. Tied scores show as a tie and recommend reading the sub-score breakdown to choose by your pet's priorities (e.g. transparency matters most for raw feeders; protein quality matters most for performance dogs).

Comparisons are canonicalised lexicographically: /vs/acana-vs-orijen and /vs/orijen-vs-acana resolve to the same page. This avoids duplicate content and consolidates link equity to a single URL per pair.

Frequently asked questions

How do you decide which brand wins a comparison?
The brand with the higher PetFoodRate composite score (out of 100) wins. The composite aggregates five sub-scores: protein quality, nutritional balance, undesirable additives, label transparency, and species adaptability. We never let price, popularity, or vet endorsements override the score — only the data on the label decides.
Why is the same comparison sometimes shown as A-vs-B and sometimes as B-vs-A?
Each pair has one canonical URL using lexicographic ordering (alphabetical). If you request /vs/orijen-vs-acana, we 301 redirect to /vs/acana-vs-orijen so the page consolidates link equity to one URL. The order does not affect which brand wins — that is decided by the score.
Are these comparisons updated when scores change?
Yes. Every comparison page reads live scores from our database, so a re-rating immediately reflects on the page. Score updates happen weekly as products are re-graded against new methodology iterations or new label data.
Do you accept payment from brands to influence the comparison verdict?
No. We never accept payment, sample fees, or affiliate-only deals from brands. The same methodology is applied uniformly to every product. Affiliate commissions exist on some links to merchants (Awin, Amazon Associates) but they never alter a product's score.
